The government has approved plans to revitalise portions of Liverpool's northern waterfront, paving the way for thousands of new homes.
A £56 million grant will facilitate the development of Central Docks, a large industrial brownfield site covering 1.4 miles (2.3 km) of dockland north of the city centre. This initiative is part of the government's broader goal to create 1.5 million new homes across the UK within the next five years.
Submitted in July, the plans include the construction of a public park and essential infrastructure to support approximately 2,350 new homes. The Central Docks project is also integral to Liverpool’s comprehensive 20-year waterfront regeneration strategy.
According to the government, funding for Central Docks, one of five neighbourhoods within the Liverpool Waters district, is expected to attract over £550 million in private investment into the city.
“A Phenomenal Boost”
Liverpool City Council will manage the development on behalf of its owner, Peel Waters. Council leader Liam Robinson stated, "This scheme has the potential to transform historic, disused dockland into an incredible new neighbourhood. The creation of thousands of new homes, alongside community facilities, a new park, cycle lanes, green streets, and rain gardens, will significantly enhance the city’s economy and environment. It will serve as a model for what housing developments in the 21st century can and should be."
Metropolitan Mayor Steve Rotheram added, "The development of Central Docks, along with ongoing efforts to regenerate Bramley Moore and Bootle, has the potential to act as a catalyst for growth."
These plans are part of a wave of new developments in and around Liverpool’s docks over the past decade, including Everton's new 52,000-seat stadium and the addition of more than 600 new homes.
