City Sees Record-Breaking Hotel Stays in a Single Month

Liverpool city centre has recorded its busiest month ever for hotel stays, with more than 195,000 rooms booked in July, according to Liverpool City Council. The figure marks the highest monthly total since records began in 2004.

Cabinet member for growth and economy, Nick Small, attributed the surge to a combination of factors, including events, shopping, nightlife, and business tourism. "It's not just down to one thing," he said.

The city has hosted several high-profile events this year, boosting visitor numbers. Highlights included concerts at Anfield Stadium by Bruce Springsteen and Dua Lipa, Liverpool and Everton football matches, the Grand National at Aintree, and the British Chess Championships.

The previous record was set in August 2018, with just over 192,000 rooms sold. The council reports that 1.25 million rooms have already been booked since January, putting the city on track to surpass 2018’s annual total of around 2.09 million.

Bill Addy, CEO of Liverpool BID Company, said the city’s hotels aim to create a “circular and sustainable visitor economy.” He added that tracking overnight stays and visitor spending helps identify which events have the greatest impact on hospitality and cultural sectors.

"This is a city that welcomes visitors," Addy said. "Supporting local businesses to provide a great experience ensures people want to stay and return."
