Cutting Hair Since 1968: Meet the 81-Year-Old Barber Who Never Quit

An 81-year-old barber who has spent almost six decades behind the chair says retirement is not on the cards, as he continues to serve generations of loyal customers in south Liverpool.

Paul Robinson began cutting hair at his barbershop on Lark Lane in Aigburth in January 1968, a time he recalls when the neighbourhood felt more like a close-knit village than a busy city suburb.

Back then, the nearby police station brought a steady stream of officers through his door, and Robinson soon became known for trimming the hair of local “bobbies” as well as residents from across the area.

Over the years, his client list has included Liverpool FC great Ian Callaghan and musicians from well-known local bands such as The Christians and The Real People.

Remarkably, much of the shop remains unchanged, including the original wooden waiting bench that has seated customers for decades.

Robinson says former clients often stop to peer through the window in disbelief that both the shop and its owner are still there.

“People come in and say it’s 40 years since they last sat on that bench,” he said. “The other day, a man came in whose father’s hair I used to cut. I cut his hair too — and now I’m cutting his son’s.

“That’s three generations coming to the same barber.”
