Everton Investing £1m to Prepare Goodison Park for Women’s Super League Debut
Everton is investing around £1 million to get Goodison Park ready for the start of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season in September, according to Colin Chong, the club’s stadium development director.
Chong said the historic stadium would be given “a new lease of life” as it becomes the new home of the Everton women’s team. The move follows an emotional farewell by the men's team in May, as they prepare to relocate to the new 53,000-seat stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
Originally slated for demolition, Goodison Park will instead be reconfigured. Plans include covering the upper stands with Everton Women branding, aligning with the club’s goal to transform the 39,572-capacity ground into “an intimate, atmospheric arena.” The women's team has previously played at Walton Hall Park, where average attendances were around 2,062.
The first phase of the transition will focus on upgrades to enhance the matchday experience and improve stadium facilities ahead of the new season, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Speaking at the Local Government Association conference in Liverpool, Chong said Everton intends to invest in Goodison Park "over a period of time" and is seeking external funding worth "tens of millions of pounds" for future phases.
The long-term vision is for Goodison Park—affectionately known as the Grand Old Lady—to become a “centre of excellence” for women’s football. The club’s official charity, Everton in the Community, is also expected to be based at the stadium in the future.
