The Old Roan pub in Aintree, a former heritage site, will be demolished to make way for new housing after plans were approved by Sefton Council.
The building, which closed over ten years ago, has remained vacant and fallen into disrepair. Despite efforts to find alternative uses, it was deemed unfeasible to reopen due to its deteriorated condition.
The new development will include 26 apartments—11 one-bedroom and 15 two-bedroom units—across three floors. Initially proposed as a taller structure, the plan was revised to three storeys.
Local concerns about parking were addressed during the planning meeting, and the project was approved with conditions related to parking and window glazing. The site, considered a local landmark, first opened in 1908 but had become an eyesore after years of neglect.
