Liverpool recorded the highest number of confirmed gas thefts in the North West of England over the past year, according to gas company Cadent.
Gas theft occurs when thieves tamper with gas pipes to bypass gas meters. Between April 2023 and July 2024, Liverpool reported 269 confirmed gas thefts, surpassing Manchester, which had 179 cases.
Dave Garner, Cadent's director of safety, warned that gas theft can lead to dangerous leaks and potentially catastrophic gas explosions. “Tampering with meters, pipes, or appliances is extremely hazardous,” he stated. “Gas theft involves individuals attempting to take gas without paying, and meter tampering is one method they use.”
Cadent reported a 25% increase in gas theft incidents across England, Scotland, and Wales. The North West ranks as the third highest region for gas theft, following the West Midlands and London. Gas engineer Asif Hussain noted an uptick in calls related to gas theft, saying, “We have indeed seen an increase. There have been reports of people outright stealing meters. When this occurs, we are called in to protect life and property due to the associated dangers.”
While gas theft is not a new issue, gas companies are increasingly concerned about the rise in cases. Garner added, “We have no concrete evidence linking the rise in incidents to the current cost of living crisis, but we are aware that many people are under financial pressure.”
To assist vulnerable households, the Cadent Foundation has established a £2 million emergency support fund and collaborates with charities. Gas fraud is a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison and fines reaching £2,000. If you suspect gas theft, you can report it anonymously to Crimestoppers through their Stay Energy Safe program.
