A loaded sawn-off shotgun has been recovered after being discovered by three teenagers on a playing field in Liverpool.
The boys, aged 14, were playing at Rice Lane Recreation Ground in Walton at around 20:20 BST on Saturday when they found the weapon inside a bag.
Police confirmed the double-barrelled shotgun contained a live cartridge in each barrel. It has since been seized and sent for forensic examination to determine whether it is linked to any previous shootings.
Merseyside Police described the find as a highly dangerous situation that could have resulted in serious injury. The boys immediately raised the alarm, enabling officers to secure the firearm safely.
The force said its Firearms Investigation Team is continuing enquiries and urged anyone with information about the weapon to come forward.
