A section of Formby pinewoods was cordoned off yesterday evening after an undetonated bomb was discovered. A dog walker alerted the ECHO, stating that their dog had unearthed the bomb before the area was closed to the public.
Upon arrival, Merseyside Police called in the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to handle the suspected WWII device. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson confirmed to the ECHO that the EOD team was deployed to Formby Point Caravan Park at the request of the police. They reported that the recovered device was a two-inch mortar smoke bomb, commonly used during World War II.
The dog walker explained that while they were walking their pet, the dog dug up the device near a walking path, prompting them to contact the authorities. A Merseyside Police spokesperson noted that they received the call about the suspicious object at around 5:25 PM on Sunday, October 6, and the EOD team later attended to safely remove and dispose of the item.
