Traffic cameras will soon be installed outside six additional Liverpool primary schools to monitor traffic during pick-up and drop-off times.

Liverpool City Council’s School Streets initiative, designed to restrict road access near school entrances, aims to enhance children’s safety and improve air quality. The program enforces weekday term-time restrictions from 08:15 to 09:15 and 14:30 to 15:30 using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. Motorists with Blue Badges and certain others will be exempt from the restrictions.

The new restrictions will apply near St Clare’s Catholic Primary School, St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, St Cleopas Church of England Primary School, Christ the King Catholic Primary School, Rice Lane Primary School, and St Michael’s in the Hamlet Community Primary School.

The council began implementing camera monitoring at the first two schools in November 2023 and plans to expand to up to 50 School Streets zones over the next four years. Consultations are underway at 20 additional schools that may be included in the future.

Simon O’Brien, Liverpool City Region’s walking and cycling commissioner, emphasised the program’s importance, stating: "There is nothing more important than the health of our children. Clean air and a calm environment around our schools during drop-off and pick-up are essential for helping pupils grow and learn in a positive atmosphere."
