New images have revealed a vision of what Birkenhead town centre could become if plans for hotels, a new leisure centre, and 2,000 new homes receive approval.
Wirral Council released the images, describing them as "another major step forward in revitalising the town centre." Key proposals include a new market, the removal of flyovers to the tunnel, more green spaces, three multi-storey car parks, and a new neighbourhood around St Werburgh’s Square.
Other ideas involve relocating the Europa Pools leisure centre and moving the Vue cinema and library into the town centre. As part of the regeneration, 2,255 new homes, hotels, and a "sponge park" along Borough Road are also being considered. The sponge park would absorb surface water, helping to reduce sewage discharges into the River Mersey.
The council hopes to enhance views of the town centre and attract more visitors with restaurants, cafés, and family-friendly bars. The masterplan also promotes walking and cycling to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
Public feedback on the plans is being encouraged by the council.
