A 24-year-old man has died after the off-road electric bike he was riding crashed inside the Queensway Tunnel beneath the River Mersey.
Korben Bell, from Neston, Cheshire, was involved in the collision on the eastbound carriageway of the tunnel shortly after 13:05 BST on Tuesday.
Merseyside Police said Mr Bell died in hospital on Wednesday.
The Queensway Tunnel links Birkenhead and Liverpool and was closed following the crash while emergency services responded to the incident.
During the closure, bus services crossing the Mersey were diverted through the Kingsway Tunnel.
Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson said Mr Bell's family was being supported by specially trained officers.
He added that the investigation remained ongoing and urged anyone who witnessed the collision or has information that could assist the inquiry to contact police.
The circumstances surrounding the crash have not been disclosed.
