Drivers in North-West England have been warned to avoid getting stranded as freezing temperatures, snow, and ice disrupt travel. National Highways issued an amber severe weather alert, cautioning that road conditions could lead to significant delays.

The A628 Woodhead Pass and other cross-Pennine routes, including Cat and Fiddle Manchester Road, have been closed due to heavy snowfall, with up to 15cm expected in some areas. Snow-clearing and anti-icing measures were implemented on rail and tram tracks, while several bus routes faced diversions.

Police have closed Grane Road in Lancashire following a crash, and Cheshire Police reported drivers ignoring road closures, obstructing gritters and plows.

National Highways Regional Operations Manager Dee Murray urged drivers to prepare for cold conditions by carrying essentials like warm clothing and a torch.

An amber cold health alert remains in effect until Saturday evening, with the Met Office predicting frosty conditions and a minimum temperature of -1°C overnight.
