A teacher facing allegations of sexually assaulting a colleague at work and at home may be banned from the profession. Hugh O’Neill is accused of making inappropriate remarks and touching a former colleague’s breasts over a 12-month period. During a hearing by the Teacher Regulation Agency (TRA), it was revealed that he allegedly had sexual contact with the female colleague despite her requests for him to stop.
O’Neill, 45, denied the claims made against him while he was employed at a special school in Knowsley, stating that he did not engage in any non-consensual acts. He asserted that any sexual encounters were consensual and expressed confusion as to why the allegations were made. He has provided 19 character witnesses who support his claims, emphasising that such behavior is not in his nature.
The panel was informed of several comments Mr. O’Neill allegedly made to the colleague, including remarks about her appearance and persistent phone calls suggesting they meet. The female colleague described his behavior as “relentless” and “pestering,” and expressed fear of losing her job if she reported him.
Mr. O’Neill stated, “I want to put this behind us and get back to the job I was taken away from.” The panel is expected to announce its decision later today, which could result in Mr. O’Neill being permanently barred from teaching if the allegations are substantiated. He has been participating in the hearing via video link from the Republic of Ireland.
